We know you want to look flawless on your big day! Having great skin is just as important as wearing the perfect bridal gown, so start your pre-wedding skincare countdown now. Our Murad skincare experts put together this helpful six-month timeline to follow for glowing, gorgeous skin on your big day.

Pre-Wedding Skincare Countdown: A few tips for a beautiful skin

 6 months to go
  •  Take daily dietary supplements to give your body the building blocks it needs to help every cell in every system.
  • Now that you’re engaged, everyone will be paying extra attention to your hands! Rejuvenate them with a monthly manicure and moisturize daily (We recommend our Youth Builder Rejuvenating AHA Hand Cream) to keep them looking and feeling soft and lovely.
3 months to go
  •  Stick to your workouts to reduce skin-damaging stress and wedding-planning anxiety.
  • Commit to a monthly facial routine to keep your complexion healthy and rejuvenated.
1 month to go
  •  Keep your skin smooth and glowing by exfoliating 1-2 times a week (We recommend trying our Skin Smoothing Polish).
  • Get your last facial 2-3 weeks before your big day to allow redness from extractions to resolve.
Week of the wedding
  •  Get a stress-relieving massage.
  • Keep your diet heavy on fruits and veggies and light on salty, processed foods, which can make your eyes look puffy and your body feel bloated. We suggest you read a bit more about the science behind eating fruits and veggies with Dr. Murad’s “Eat Your Water” research.
The Big Day

Remember that it’s likely something won’t go as planned or turn out the way you imagined it, but don’t let that ruin your day. As Dr. Murad says, “When you learn to be imperfect, your life will be more perfect.”

Do Skin Types Matter

There’s no dearth of skin products on the market to match every skin type, but don’t let it drive you crazy. Go by how your skin feels in response to the products you choose. Most people are oily in some places and drier in others. A few tips to consider:

  • If you’ve got oily skin, don’t be afraid to cleanse, treat and moisturize twice a day, as would a person with dry skin. Even though your skin looks “moist” doesn’t mean you could be missing key lipids to maintain your skin’s barrier: Your oil glands within the follicles are simply genetically programmed to be more active. Try using a cleanser with hydroxy acids on alternative days, or more often if your skin seems to respond well to it.
  • Dry skin is the most fragile. Be careful about over cleansing and over exfoliating, as your skin is more susceptible to irritation. Use a cleanser and tone with hydrating ingredients and exfoliate gently (and not every day). Look for products that contain skin soothers such as chamomile extract and arnica.
  • Fair-skinned people and those who spend a lot of time outdoors need to be extra cautious about over exposure to UV radiation. While a sunscreen with SPF 15 if sufficient for many, I recommend upping that coverage to at least 30 if you’re more sensitive to the sun. Similarly, if you take drugs that increase your sensitivity to the sun, which is the case for birth control pills, for example, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
  • Don’t overdo it. No matter what kind of skin you have, it’s easy to over clean and over exfoliate and in a word, irritate. You can also trigger excessive oil production with excessive use of soaps, cleansers, scrubs, and toners made with drying alcohols. Listen to what your skin is telling you and adjust your skin care routine accordingly

Give products up to six months to work and show results.

Why You Should Be Using An Oil-Based Makeup Remover

Did you know:

Today’s makeup is super long-wearing—that means great day coverage but a real risk of clogged pores and acne at night. To meet the challenge of easily removing these long-wearing products without stripping your skin, we’ve developed Renewing Cleansing Oil. Renewing Cleansing Oil is a remarkable new, non-greasy cleanser that has the power to thoroughly remove your makeup without scrubbing. Renewing Cleansing Oil not only leaves your skin remarkably clean, it actually leaves your skin noticeably softer and smoother.

How it works:

Renewing Cleansing Oil forms a strong bond with the oils and minerals that give your makeup its staying power. That’s why when you rinse off with Renewing Cleansing Oil, makeup, BB cream, sun-block, excess oil and impurities rinse off too—leaving skin free of potentially pore clogging debris. And Renewing Cleansing Oil isn’t just an exceptional makeup remover. Renewing Cleansing Oil supports the health of your skin by preserving your natural pH balance and strengthening skin’s natural protective barrier.

How to use:

Massage Renewing Cleansing Oil’s botanical oil formula directly onto dry skin to dissolve makeup—even the most stubborn mascara. Rinse off dissolved makeup and grime with a splash of water to enjoy skin that’s soft, residue-free and healthfully clean.

Meet Elodie Rivet, Esthetician and Makeup Artist

We had the opportunity to interview Elodie, a licensed esthetician with over 7 years of experience in the beauty industry. Elodie’s passion for skin care and makeup has been proven through her experience working with top cosmetic and skin care brand. She is also a freelance makeup artist, where she applies her passion and expertise to beauty and fashion photo-shoots. We are excited to share with you her vision on and advice for beautiful, healthy skin!

What’s your favorite part about working in the beauty industry?

I really enjoy creating regimen for my customers. Listening to them and understanding their skin concerns to find answers and solutions is rewarding. I like explaining how each products will help them achieve the skin they want. That’s what really makes me happy. When a customer reaches out to me for more advice a few months later, this is when you realize that you have created a connection with this person, and that is priceless!

What’s your biggest beauty secret?

This is not a secret, but I love trying new skin care products!
I am very loyal to my night routine in terms of cleansing. I NEVER, ever skip using my Renewing Cleansing Cream on my Clarisonic brush. Nothing is can compare to that result. My skin always feels incredibly smooth and deeply clean. Any products that are going to be applied after will be absorbed deeper into the skin, for better results. Cleansing is for me the number one step that will make a big difference for a perfect healthy, glowing skin.

Who is your beauty icon and why do you admire her?

Jessica Alba is my beauty icon, stylish but never over the top. Her career as a business woman and as a mom is incredible. She is a real example for everyone.
In terms of beauty, she believes in having an easy but daily skin care routine, which is also essential to me. In terms of makeup, she always goes for a flawless but luminescent complexion with either bold lips for a pop of color or a nice sexy smoky eyes which is a classic but so modern at the same time.

What are your favorite Murad products and why?

Over the past months, my skin seemed to have changed a little. It is not as dry as it used to be. So to make sure that my makeup is staying on all day, I use the Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15. Not only does it provide a matte finish, but it also hydrates my skin. For less of a matte look but deep hydration, I choose the Skin Perfection Lotion.

If you could only have one makeup item, for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Only one? This is difficult. If I had to choose one, I would go for a concealer because I have red cheeks. If this had to be my only makeup item, I would still be able to mix it with a lip balm for a nude lip look or apply a touch of it on the eye lid for a bright, eye-opening look.

What is your favorite treatment to give clients and why?

Facials are without a doubt my favorite kind of treatment. Before each treatment, I consult with my clients in order to understand their skin concerns and their expectations. I love seeing how they relax and forget about their stressful life for a moment. A facial treatment is very beneficial for the skins overall health and wellness and it allows me to connect with clients on a deeper level, which I am all about.

Sensitive Skin

People of all skin colors can have sensitive skin, but it is more common in those with a fair complexion and light-colored eyes. Your skin tends to sting when you put certain things on it, and you’ve probably learned over the years what to avoid. Your skin may even react to cold temperatures or wind by becoming red and irritated. You may also notice tiny cracks in your skin, and that makeup becomes flaky. In fact, the barrier function of skin in people with sensitivities has been disturbed, which is why it’s so vulnerable to anything that’s put on it.

Although the irritation –redness, stinging itching, and burning –that you sometimes experience is not the same as a truly allergic reaction, you are more prone to true allergies, and you can break out in a rash all over if you are allergic to a fragrance or some other ingredient or drug.

With few exceptions, the formulations of my products are safe for the most people with sensitive skin. Therefore I have not designed a separate daily regimen for this skin type. Usually following the recommendations for dry skin will be fine for you. However, you may have an allergic response to some ingredient in any formulation, regardless of how much testing has been done to ensure that it is unlikely to cause a reaction. So you might do your own skin test on the inside of your upper arm before using a product for the first time. Also, you can develop an allergy to something you have used without any problems for yours, so don’t ignore any unusual symptoms such as redness, rashes, irritation, stinging, or dry patches that occur when you use a product.

According to some surveys, about 40% of women say they have sensitive skin. They say their skin becomes red, itches, feels tight, stings, and burns in response to changes in the climate, in the reaction to the sun, or when they use some products. No one knows how many people really have sensitive skin, but it is estimated that as many as 20% of people are allergic to certain things that make contact with their skin.

Exfoliate

Cell turnover is an ongoing process. The skin cell forms at the bottom of the epidermis, rises up through that layer, dies, and is shed. It’s nudged free by wear and tear and replaced by a newly arrived cell that has completed the same process. As all of the body processes slow beginning at about age twenty, so does cell turnover. In youth the cells journey from the bottom of the epidermis to shedding, which takes about 28 days. By the time you’ve reached late middle age, it takes about 7-10 days longer. A week and a half doesn’t seem like much, but to a dead cell hanging tenaciously to the skins surface, its time enough to become dried out and crinkle around the edges. That’s why mature skin often feels so rough to the touch. And the irregular surface created by these flaking cells also reflect light differently, so skin appears dull and sallow, with fine lines standing out among the miniscule cracks in the surface. Skin cells are a little like the leaves on a tree. If I pick a fresh green leaf and put water on it, the natural moisture-holding molecules in the leaf won’t let anything penetrate. The water will bead up and run off, and the leaf is smooth and pliable for a while. If I put the stem in water, some of it will enter the leaf, keeping it fresh and green a little longer. Eventually, though, it will dry out.

subfeature-3-skinsmoothing polish

That’s what happens to the dead skin cells that pile up on the surface of your skin. For a while the natural moisture factors that surround them keep them supple. But eventually, exposure to the environment takes its toll. To keep that barrier strong, you have to remove those dead cells. Exfoliation makes up for nature’s slowdown by chemically or mechanically removing the topmost layer of those dead cells. To replace the shed cells, the epidermis then steps up production of new ones. The body’s natural effort to keep up with this increased shedding creates healthy cells more quickly. I believe that using an exfoliating agent to increase cell turnover to a more youthful rate is one of the best things you can do to improve your skin’s appearance. It’s also the step that gives you visible results most quickly. That’s because removing those rough cells improves skin color and texture almost immediately.

Exfoliation also temporarily improves circulation, so your skin appears brighter. I think skin literally glows immediately after an exfoliating treatment. People with acne may be surprised to see that not only do their fine lines and wrinkles disappear with regular chemical exfoliation with hydroxy acids, but they have fewer pimples as well. Hydroxy acids normalize the skin cell formation and shedding process in the hair follicles. The abnormal production of skin cells is one of the factors that causes blackheads and whiteheads, the precursors of acne, to form. Within a few weeks of using a hydroxy acid, you’ll notice less clogging of the pores and fewer breakouts.

If you choose your skin care products wisely, you can sustain the rejuvenating effects indefinitely. You can accomplish a little exfoliation when you wash your face using a cleanser that contains gentle abrasive materials such as jojoba beads or cornmeal and/or hydroxy acids to remain on your skin. And you can give your skin a serious turnover boost with a treatment product that contains one or more hydroxy acids once a day or several times a week. To jump start the process or to occasionally get a dramatic improvement you can use an exfoliating facial. And an esthetician can safely use a more concentrated solution hydroxy acids that are available in most treatment products for consumer use. A dermatologist can use an even more powerful glycolic acid formula to actually peel the top layer of skin.

We recommend the following Murad exfoliating cleanser:

  • AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser: Cleanse and smooth texture. This gentle but efficient exfoliator works two ways. Salicylic, Lactic and Glycolic Acids encourage clarity and brightness by dissolving skin cell buildup. Jojoba beads further polish and retexturize.  Part of the Murad Age Reform line of anti aging and anti wrinkle skin care products designed for genetic aging.
  • Skin Smoothing Polish: Powerful exfoliating scrub removes embedded impurities, without stripping skin of natural moisture, revealing a more vibrant complexion.
  • Transforming Powder: Dual-action cleanser and exfoliator in a unique, water-activated powder which transforms to effectively cleanse and exfoliate without over-scrubbing.

Skin Brushing

Skin brushing is a simple technique that stimulates blood and lymph flow, removes dead skin cells, and encourages new cell growth. You need only a loofah or a body brush with natural rather that you can reach your back and buttocks. To work your whole upper body, start at your feet and work your way up. Brushing the whole body in this way takes between three and five minutes, depending on how many strokes you give to each area. Pay particular attention to the cellulite-prone areas, using small circular movements. It is best done in the morning –the resulting acceleration of blood flow can be quite invigorating. The difference in your skin may be visible after just a few sessions –it becomes very soft and develops a rosy glow. Dry skin brushing must be done gently without harsh or rigorous rubbing that can damage the dermis. Overbrushing causes the skin to turn red and become irritated.

Treatments that stimulate the blood flow to the skin can have beneficial effects when combined with other principles of internal and external skincare. Although there are no blood vessels in the epidermis, the dermis is rich with blood vessels, and the epidermis receives nutrients and oxygen supply from the dermis. The blood vessels in the dermis are continuations of larger vessels located deeper in the body that branch out into smaller vessels as they approach the surface of the skin. Brushing can help to stimulate these vessels.

Tips for Combination Skin

BL15_553-SunDamageComplexions

Late afternoon: your forehead, nose and chin look embarrassingly shiny and your pores are about the size of craters of the moon. No matter how much powder you apply, the shine just reappears with a vengeance. What’s even more intriguing is that the rest of your face looks perfectly fine: no shine, no enlarged pores, just smooth, balanced skin. Or maybe there’s some dryness on the sides of your cheeks? Either way, you are experiencing a bad case of COMBINATION SKIN.

You know you have combination skin when your T-zone is oily most of the times while the rest of your face stays normal or dry. The imaginary ”T “of the T-zone is formed by your forehead, nose with the surrounding area, plus your chin. This skin type in particular is always a challenge in skincare – products for oily skin will work on your T-zone but present the risk of over-drying the rest of your face, while hydrating products for dry skin will cause even more trouble on the oily parts while balancing the rest.

This is where products specifically formulated for combination skin are needed. Products for combination skin reduce oil production without stripping skin of its moisture while balancing and hydrating the rest of the face.

To balance your oily and dry areas effectively, give your skin some extra TLC.

Here are a few tips for combination skin:

Exfoliate regularly

– Exfoliation will remove the layer of dead skin cells that can lead to acne breakouts because of too much oil. If your sides are dry, then your skin’s cell turnover is slowed down and exfoliation will help improve this condition. Fruit enzymes, AHAs and BHAs are all effective exfoliators for combination skin.

Hydrate

– Probably not what you wished, especially for your T-Zone! But maintaining optimal hydration will help your skin produce lessmoisture oil and balance out the entire face. Special moisturizers for combination skin are water-based, oil-free, and include antioxidants and plant extracts that combat oil production. Such plants can be Queen of the Meadow, Myrtle, Witch Hazel, Cinnamon, Argania, etc.

Shrink the pores

– Often your pores in the T-zone appear enlarged. To minimize them and give your skin a smooth, even look, it helps to have some occasional steam bath for your face. Always use a gentle cleanser formulated for combination skin and use a toner that will help shrink those pores in an instant. Toners are designed to help balance your skin’s pH after cleansing and they are formulated with gentle astringents and botanicals that calm the skin.

wash

Wash your face regularly

– It doesn’t get easier that using a special cleanser for combination skin. Morning and evening, wash your face to remove dirt and impurities and balance skin effectively. Cleansers for combination skin are gentle and don’t dry out your skin. Never go to bed with makeup on – it can cause more irritation and lead to imbalance.

Drink water

– Maintaining optimal internal hydration is essential for beautiful, balanced skin. It’s not just about the water intake, but also about other healthy fluids that count as “water”: natural juices, soups, herbal tea and milk.

Age Spots – Not just an age problem

One of the first signs of aging is hyper-pigmentation, manifested through dark spots on your skin. Also known as liver spots, they have nothing to do with the liver, as almost in all cases they are caused by long-term sun exposure. At first, one may notice dark brown spots and patches on the hands or on the face, the areas that are almost all the time exposed to the sun. That’s why the spots will appear darker in these areas, more than they appear in other areas of the body. There can also be a genetic predisposition to developing age spots in a lifetime.

The first spots can appear in the early twenties and can go away in time through the skin’s natural regeneration process, if skin is protected when exposed to sun. Most of the dark spots appear with the aging process because that’s when skin loses its ability to regenerate fast. The dark color is caused by the melanocyte cells which produce an excess of melanin – the skin pigment, and this is gets deposited in the top layers of the skin.

These unpleasant spots can occasionally appear as a result of the use of birth control pills, hormonal imbalance, insufficient vitamin B in your body or skin reactions to perfumes and creams after sun exposure. Make sure you have a diet rich in Vitamin B and don’t apply perfumes (or products containing fragrance) directly on your skin prior to sun exposure. It is important to protect these spots from UVs even if they’re not sun related, because more sun can worsen the appearance

Treating hyper-pigmentation is best done with a melanin suppressant, its action leading to the slow recovery of the area and the lightening of the spot. Hydroquinone is the best known solution for dark spots but there are other useful alternatives like antioxidants, Azelaic Acid or Kojic Acid. It is important to avoid sun exposure – any direct UV exposure will darken the spots even more. Wear sunscreen or cover the area with clothes as much as possible; some of the melanin suppressants usually sensitize the skin and the reaction to UVs can darken the age spots even more.

Can you prevent dark spots and age spots from forming on your skin just by making lifestyle choices?

Dr. Howard Murad explains how a combination of skin care and Inclusive Health® can help you to prevent dark spots on your skin.
