My Murad skincare regime

Murad has become a part of my skincare regime now for 2 months and I am so excited to finally share that regime with you! For year I have been so notorious for not washing my face every night and giving it the TLC it really needs, in the end it only made my dry skin suffer more.

Review by Roxanne from bonjourblissblog.com

I have to admit that less than a year ago you would find me crawling into bed after exhaustedly wiping my entire face with a baby wipe before bed and that’s it!! Terrible I know right? Must be a mom thing, I can’t be the only one who was doing this! They just work exceptionally well to remove mascara and are oh-so convenient…thank gosh I stopped though because I was only neglecting my skin by doing this and I knew better. On comes the colder weather and my dry skin was getting worse, as soon as mid fall hits there is a drastic change in the condition of my skin. When Murad reached out to me I thought, well isn’t this product just for acneic skin? NO! They have a phenomenal range of products for different skin types with fantastic reviews if you check them out here at Sephora! As I mentioned previously this week I used to do aesthetics and after studying the skin you have a greater appreciation for the dynamics of it and what products claim to do and how. After checking out their entire website I knew the exact products I wanted to try! So, I have been using about 6 of their products religiously paired with my Spin cleansing brush I talked about on Instagram. Here are the products I am using & how…

Evenings:

  1. Cleanse & Tone with the Age Reform Refreshing Cleanser + my Spin brush
  2. Treat with the Resurgence Age-Diffusing Serum
  3. Hydrate & Protect with the Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture

Mornings:

  1. Cleanse & Tone with the Age Reform Refreshing Cleanser
  2. Hydrate & Protect with the Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture
  3. Treat & Protect with the Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Refreshing Cleanser: This is a gentle formula cleanser that hydrates my skin while removing impurities from the surface but not stripping it of its oils (so important guys!). I cleanse every night with my Spin brush and in the mornings just my hands.

Age-Diffusing Serum: This serum works wonders and I can feel it work when I use it, your skin works so hard at night while you sleep so why not help it do its job? This product helps fight age-related dehydration which has been perfect for my skin and helped to reduce the fine lines I see creeping up on me!

Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture: This moisturizer is phenomenal, I put it on very heavy at night after my serum dries and in the morning my face feels baby smooth and seems to hold its moisture better all day as well!

Invisiblur Perfecting Shield: This bad boy has replaced my usual primer, I rarely wear foundation as I am a die hard tinted moisturizer fan and lately I have been using the Invisiblur + my Smashbox Halo bronzing powder (found here) and it’s perfect!

I’ve also been using their Hydro-Dynamic Eye Moisturizer at night and their Soothing Skin & lip care during the day with the cold front upon us! My skin has been really appreciating all of these products and I look forward to seeing the results after long term use!

Forever young: Murad’s Age Reform Intensives review

As a 20-year-old, I’m not super concerned about anti-aging/wrinkles just yet, but I am definitely keen to try anything that will put both of these things off. After spending a lot of time outside in the sun this summer, I became conscious of some premature signs of aging on my face when a few dreaded dark spots started to appear. To battle these dark spots early on, and attempt to try and erase the damage my many careless sunscreen-less days had caused, I turned to Murad’s Age Reform line.

Review by Victoria from Self-Explanatori

Since anti-aging is not my top priority, I opted to try three simple (and less daunting) products: the Intensive Resurfacing Peel, Rapid Collagen Infusion and Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture Cream.

I LOVE face masks and peels. Whether they’re $5.00 or $50.00, and no matter what their purpose is, they always leave your face feeling like you’re fresh out of the womb. For those of you who don’t know the difference between a face mask and peel, let me break it down for you. A peel (gently) removes the outermost layer of skin to reveal the smooth layer underneath. This process helps even out dark spots (like acne scars and sun damage), and with continued use, many peels will even fade fine lines. Masks are geared towards working on your skin as is to absorb excess oil, enhance moisture, detoxify, or provide any other type of treatment.

Murad-Intensive-Radiance-Peel-Treatment-Review

If you’ve read any of my past skincare product reviews, you’ll know that my favourite products make me feel like they’re actually actively doing something for my skin. I am the type of person who loves being reassured that a product’s active ingredients are working hard by an instantly-provided cooling effect on the skin, or the creation of a tingling sensation. This Murad peel does exactly that. It has a light fresh scent that disappears once applied, and it tingles for the first minute as it begins to interact with your skin.

All you have to do is gently massage and apply the peel all over your face after cleansing and toning. It has gentle microdermabrasion from bamboo beads (fancy, I know) and stimulates cell growth/turnover through glycolic and salicylic acid. I can’t comment on how well this peel would work on older and/or more damaged skin, but I instantly noticed that my face looked brighter, and felt a lot smoother after only one application. After using this peel three times over three weeks, many of my dark spots had noticeably faded. If you have any lingering acne scars, the Intensive Resurfacing Peel is a product that will definitely speed up the never-ending recovery process.

Even though the ingredients and tingling sensation I’ve talked about may make this product seem a little harsh, I assure you that even someone with sensitive skin can use it. You’re supposed to keep this peel on for a maximum of 10 minutes before washing it off with warm water, but because it’s so intense you will still feel/see results even if you can only leave it on for a few minutes.

The Rapid Collagen Infusion is meant to increase firmness after just one application, improving skin’s texture to reduce wrinkle depth. Essentially it is supposed to reveal softer and smoother skin. I used this product at night under moisturizer and found that my skin appeared less dull and tired-looking in the morning, even after some late Netflix nights. Again, I can’t attest to how well this product works on fine lines, wrinkles, or firmness, but it definitely has the ability to rejuvenate your skin.

The Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture cream is unique because even though it’s part of an age reform line, it’s truly an all purpose cream. It claims to lock in moisture for 8 hours while restoring resilience and tone and it truly does all of that. It’s fragrance free and super lightweight making it perfect for day-time and night-time use. Even though it’s lightweight, this cream is still super hydrating and it absorbs into the skin quickly. I also had no issues using it under makeup which is a huge plus for me.

Personally I find that drugstore creams are hydrating enough for my skin except for in the coldest part of Winter, so I understand the hesitation towards dropping a lot of money on a face cream. That being said, if you’re looking for a rich, lightweight daytime moisturizer, or are already using other products from this line, this is definitely a product to save up for.

If anti-aging isn’t something you are worried about yet, then this obviously isn’t the skincare line for you. But if anti-aging is something you are starting to think about or, like me, you are looking to get rid of some minor dark spots, I would definitely recommend trying out some of these products.

Anti-aging Ingredients, The Solution In a Jar

Anti-aging products take so many forms nowadays: from creams to cleansers, from serums to exfoliants, all of these promise a specific ingredient that addresses the anti aging skin concerns. While formulas become more and more complex, and the range of products designed for aging skin is being diversified, not all products present major differences in terms of ingredients.

But of course, there are ingredients that are almost an imperative for any anti-aging product formula and need to address dryness, flakiness, spots and wrinkles. Moisturizers, in particular, are a must in any anti aging product, in order to maintain healthy skin and to help fight aging signs. Whether it’s hormonal or genetic or environmental, the symptoms of aging can be alleviated with topical skin care, but not permanently overcome.

Some of the most popular ingredients in anti aging creams and treatments are on everyone’s lips but not everyone is totally aware of their role in skin care. The best anti-aging ingredients are usually hydrators, vitamins, proteins and botanicals:

Collagen

The skin protein is responsible for maintaining elasticity by binding water molecules and preventing the cellular water loss; collagen fibers are the ones that provide support and strength to the skin. Their loss can be compensated with collagen in creams, or by stimulating the body to produce more collagen on its own. Nutrition plays an important role in our body’s collagen production.

What is collagen and why is it important for my skin?

Retinol

It is a natural form of Vitamin A which is essential for maintaining the skin functions and necessary for cell renewal; supplements can make up for the lack of this vitamin in our bodies.

Coenzyme Q10

This is a potent antioxidant which is praised for its anti-aging benefits, usually quite efficient in body aging prevention; it occurs naturally in our skin but its presence decreases with age, so internal or topical supplements are recommended.

Plant Based Estrogens

Replacing the loss of natural estrogen that comes with aging, they deliver hydration and improve elasticity when skin needs it mostly. Estrogen is a female hormone involved in the development of the female characteristics and in maintaining skin elasticity.

Sodium PCA

It is a natural ingredient derived from vegetal sources that is also a very efficient emollient on the skin. It is usually used for intensive hydration of aging skin.

Glycerin

One of the best humectants in skin care, it improves smoothness and hydration and is used in most of the topical products because of its water retaining properties.

Essential Fatty Acids

Vital elements that regenerate and restore skin while providing intense hydration, they are considered some of the most nourishing ingredients; internally or topically, they are “essential” for our bodies.

Botanicals and Fruit Enzymes

Nature has its riches, like ingredients that have regenerating, nourishing, soothing and moisturizing properties; fruit enzymes are also very efficient exfoliators for aging skin.

AHAs & BHAs

Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids are the most popular exfoliators out there. AHAs are stronger and BHAs are known to be milder, suitable for normal and sensitive skin.

Lactic Acid

An exfoliator as well (it is basically an Alpha Hydroxy Acid), it is suitable for almost any type of skin and softens while exfoliating the dead skin cells layers on the surface. Its main benefit is that it doesn’t dry out the skin.

Age Spots – Not just an age problem

One of the first signs of aging is hyper-pigmentation, manifested through dark spots on your skin. Also known as liver spots, they have nothing to do with the liver, as almost in all cases they are caused by long-term sun exposure. At first, one may notice dark brown spots and patches on the hands or on the face, the areas that are almost all the time exposed to the sun. That’s why the spots will appear darker in these areas, more than they appear in other areas of the body. There can also be a genetic predisposition to developing age spots in a lifetime.

The first spots can appear in the early twenties and can go away in time through the skin’s natural regeneration process, if skin is protected when exposed to sun. Most of the dark spots appear with the aging process because that’s when skin loses its ability to regenerate fast. The dark color is caused by the melanocyte cells which produce an excess of melanin – the skin pigment, and this is gets deposited in the top layers of the skin.

These unpleasant spots can occasionally appear as a result of the use of birth control pills, hormonal imbalance, insufficient vitamin B in your body or skin reactions to perfumes and creams after sun exposure. Make sure you have a diet rich in Vitamin B and don’t apply perfumes (or products containing fragrance) directly on your skin prior to sun exposure. It is important to protect these spots from UVs even if they’re not sun related, because more sun can worsen the appearance

Treating hyper-pigmentation is best done with a melanin suppressant, its action leading to the slow recovery of the area and the lightening of the spot. Hydroquinone is the best known solution for dark spots but there are other useful alternatives like antioxidants, Azelaic Acid or Kojic Acid. It is important to avoid sun exposure – any direct UV exposure will darken the spots even more. Wear sunscreen or cover the area with clothes as much as possible; some of the melanin suppressants usually sensitize the skin and the reaction to UVs can darken the age spots even more.

Can you prevent dark spots and age spots from forming on your skin just by making lifestyle choices?

Dr. Howard Murad explains how a combination of skin care and Inclusive Health® can help you to prevent dark spots on your skin.

What are AHAs and BHAs?

What are AHAs and BHAs?

We know how important it is to understand what you are putting on your skin. By now, you may have heard about alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) and how essential they are for maintaining youthful-looking skin. Next to using sunscreen every day, a well-formulated AHA- or BHA-based treatment is critical to maintaining a healthy, hydrated, more even-toned complexion. Dr. Murad was one of the pioneers of using AHAs in topical skincare, helping modernize skin science. Let’s look at the difference between AHAs and BHAs to see which is right for you.

What are AHAs?
AHAs are naturally occurring substances found in various fruits, sugar cane and sour milk. Glycolic acid, the AHA found in sugar cane, is used in many Murad products because it is especially well suited for use in skincare.

How do AHAs work?
The main benefit of AHAs is their ability to exfoliate the skin to repair dry, aging and sun-damaged skin. Glycolic acid works by loosening the bond that holds together the top layers of dead skin cells. By removing the excess build-up on the surface of the skin, AHAs allow newer, softer, healthier-looking skin to emerge. An additional benefit to clearing excess buildup is that moisturizers and treatments can penetrate better.

AHAs also help with age spots and skin discoloration, and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Using AHAs does, however, make your skin more vulnerable to damage from the sun—a concern with any kind of exfoliating treatment. So always use a moisturizer containing SPF 15 or higher.

What are BHAs?
BHAs are more commonly known as salicylic acid. The main difference between AHAs and BHAs is oil solubility. AHAs are water soluble only, while BHAs are oil soluble. This means BHAs get down into the pores to cut through the oil that’s clogging them. They also have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, so BHAs are perfect for treating acne-prone skin and blackheads. The most common BHA in skincare products is salicylic acid, which occurs naturally in willow bark and sweet birch. Like AHAs, BHAs make your skin more vulnerable to damage from the sun, so always use a moisturizer containing SPF 15 or higher when you treat your skin with BHAs.

Adventures in Product Development: Rapid Collagen Infusion

By Jeff Murad, VP of Product Development

Collagen is one of the most important elements of healthy skin. In fact, the gradual decline of our bodies’ natural collagen is one of the main factors reapidof what we see and feel as aging. Lower levels of collagen in the dermis appear as thinner, sagging skin and wrinkles. But collagen is an important building block throughout our bodies, from our blood vessels to our tendons. The effects of its decline in our skin are just the visible manifestation. Often when people say they feel “old” they are referring to the internal effects of collagen loss.

For these reasons, collagen is a big buzzword in the anti-aging industry. Unfortunately, it is generally not much more than that because it is very difficult for the body to utilize collagen that it does not create. The oral collagen in supplements or drinks is broken down in your digestive tract and never gets a chance to supplement the body’s lost collagen. Topically applied collagen is also often less than hoped for. The collagen protein is simply too large to penetrate into the skin, let alone penetrate all the way down to the skin’s dermis where our natural collagen creates youthful structure. In fact, until now, the only way to achieve this was to get a collagen injection.

That is why the technology behind Murad’s Rapid Collagen Infusion is so exciting. For the first time, topically applied collagen can actually be functional in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Before being added to the formula, Murad’s unique collagen is broken down into its component amino acids, while maintaining the same ratio and arrangement as in intact collagen. Unlike the non-optimized collagen protein generally found in products, these collagen amino acids are small enough to penetrate into the surface of the skin where they absorb moisture to visibly plump up fine lines and textural imperfections.

Listen to Jeff educate more about the ingredients that make this formula unique in the following video:

Why you should exfoliate at least once a week

Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine and your skin needs it to feel smooth and healthy again.

Throughout your life, your skin will change constantly. In fact, your skin will regenerate itself approximately every 27 days. New cells grow and push the older ones to the surface (the epidermis). Eventually, the dead cells break away from the epidermis and fall off.

External factors like pollution, makeup and stress and can also cause breakout and block pores. Thankfully, exfoliating regularly can prevent this and enhance your skin appearance. By avoiding a dull skin appearance and promoting the absorption of the nutrients it needs to stay hydrated.

Exfoliating will maximize the results of your skincare routine by removing dead skin cells so that your serums, creams and masks can penetrate your skin for maximum results.

We recommend that you gently exfoliate your skin once or twice a week for maximum results depending on your skin type and skin sensitivity.

Our Murad suggestion:

AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser:

This cleanser provides two types of exfoliators.
  • Salicylic, lactic and glycolic acids will gently exfoliation to reveal softer and smoother skin.
  • Jojoba beans will aid in the mechanic exfoliation process to clarifying the skin but also stimulate blood circulation which improves bringing the oxygen to skin cells and improve skin color.
