Don’t scare your skin this Halloween!

Halloween makeup can cause irritation and breakouts. Here are some tips on what you can do to prevent these reaction.

Prepare Your Skin
Before applying all those layers of makeup and face paint, wash your face, moisturize and use a face primer to help preserve the makeup’s rich colors and provide a smooth skin surface for application.

Remove All Of It
Wash your face and don’t leave that heavy Halloween costume makeup on overnight! No matter how exhausted you are after your night out, you need to wash your face and remove all the makeup and before crawling into bed, be sure to moisturize your skin again so you wake up refreshed and replenished.

Happy Halloween.

Things You Didn’t Know About Sunscreen

Sun protection is crucial for your skin. You’re probably using sunscreen every day, but do you know how to use it?

  1. Higher SPF doesn’t mean better protection – it means longer protection. SPF of 15 filters up to 95% of the UVs while SPF50 up to 98%. But the higher the SPF number, the longer you can stay in the sun without burning. In theory, SPF of 15 means you can safely be in the sun up to 15 times longer than you could without using sunscreen. This is only a guideline and it is 100% valid only if you’re using the sunscreen correctly and reapplying as indicated.
  2. Less is NOT more. Apply generous amounts of sunscreen lotion– and make sure you reapply as needed. You can lose protection even when you sweat or rub your skin.
  3. UV-Bs are the ultraviolet rays that burn your skin – but not the only ones to cause damage! While UV-As only cause sun burns in large doses, they are still associated with aging and other detrimental changes to the skin because of their action on the collagen and elastin fibrils. UV-As are milder, but they are still not safe. So make sure you choose a sunscreen that guards skin from both UV-As and UV-Bs.
  4. The SPF number only measures the amount of UV-B protection you get. It doesn’t measure the amount of UV-A protection, which is given by another number. When purchasing a product, try to find out the UV-A protection factor. If this is not available, a broad-spectrum sunscreen which protects against both A and B rays will suffice.
  5. Clothes are not an efficient barrier against sun damage. Wear sunscreen on your entire body under your clothes when you spend lots of time outdoors. Clothes only have a SPF of 4 up to 7, not enough to protect during longer sun exposure.
  6. Tan is the skin’s defense reaction to the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. It eventually acts as a filter for ultraviolet rays (partially) but this doesn’t recommend using your newly achieved tan as SPF. The beginning stage of tanning is essentially skin inflammation and the tan itself is just damaged skin which can be seriously affected when overexposed to sun.
  7. Layering sunscreen lotions will not multiply the SPF protection. If you apply a lotion with SPF 15 and then makeup with SPF 20, the total SPF you’re benefiting from is 20; the SPF you end up with is the highest one you have applied.
  8. Sunscreen will not prevent body from producing the necessary amount of Vitamin D. Your skin needs UV-B rays to make vitamin D. While these can be filtered out by sunscreen, you only need approximately 10 minutes of sun a day for producing vitamin D – which you are likely to get considering people almost never apply sunscreen correctly and just a little time outdoors is enough. Be careful though: your skin stops producing Vitamin D a few minutes after sun exposure. Sunbathing for hours will not increase your vitamin D levels.

Coconut Extract an ideal agent for conditioning the skin

People in the tropics once called the coconut the “tree of life.”

Dr. Murad has discovered that the same complex lipid structure that makes coconut oil healthy to eat also makes Coconut Extract an ideal agent for conditioning the skin and protecting it from moisture loss.

This highly potent ingredient was incorporated into Hydro-Dynamic® Ultimate Moisture to improve and enhance its ability to protect, hydrate, soften and smooth for a more youthful complexion.

Collagen Building Foods

Collagen is the foundation of healthy skin. It provides the natural support structure that gives skin strength and resilience. It helps our lips stay plump and prevents our cheeks from drooping into jowls. However, as we age, our body’s natural production of collagen decreases. Generally, the first signs of age-related collagen loss are fine lines, which can develop into wrinkles over time. Both men and women lose about one percent of their collagen per year after their 30th birthday. For women, however, this loss of collagen escalates significantly in the first five years after menopause.

To help combat this decline, here are nine collagen-boosting foods you can easily incorporate into your daily diet:

  1. Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids create an ideal environment for collagen production. Find this nutrient in fish such as salmon and black cod.

  2. Prunes

As free radicals attack the skin, they break down collagen. To combat free radical damage, eat antioxidant rich prunes. Eat five to six prunes daily for a great health boost.

  3. Manuka Honey

This special honey from New Zealand has long been promoted for its special healing properties. Manuka Honey has been touted as helpful in the formation of strong collagen. Additionally, it is rich in antioxidants and has been traditionally used to help to reduce inflammation and breakouts.

  4. Pineapple

Your body needs an ample amount of the mineral manganese for collagen production, especially when healing wounds. Pineapple is high in manganese and can help you achieve the recommended daily amount of 2.3 milligrams per day.

  5. Turkey

Turkey contains carnosine, which research suggests may slow down the collagen damaging aging process called cross-linking. Cross-linking makes collagen stiff and less resilient. Eat turkey two to three times a week to help your skin snap back into shape.

  6. Oranges

Your body uses Vitamin C to make collagen and elastin, proteins that help keep your skin firm. Get 75 – 90 milligrams of vitamin c daily for ideal collagen production.

  7. Grapefruit

After age 50, it is recommended that you concentrate on a variety of fruits and vegetables to boost your vitamin c intake. Grapefruit is a great vitamin c-rich alternative to oranges.

  8. Shellfish

Shellfish contains a concentrated amount of copper, an essential mineral the body uses to bind collagen and elastin for strong, healthy skin. Consume 0.9 milligram of copper a day to help boost healthy collagen and elastin production.

  9. Tomatoes, pepper and beets.

These red foods are an excellent source of lycopene, an antioxidant that boost skin’s own natural sun protection to help prevent collagen damage resulting from UV exposure.

While the body is constantly producing new collagen, since that production naturally decreases with age, adding collagen-boosting foods to your diet is a great way to encourage your body to produce as much as it can, no matter what your age.

It’s a smart step that can help keep skin healthy and supple.

6 Easy Rules of Summer Skincare

Naturally, there are products you just can’t live without all year round, but it is recommended to change a few of your skincare products with the change of seasons. While in winter we tend to use thicker, intensely hydrating creams and strong serum treatments, summer time calls for lighter, gentler formulas. Here’s what you should change this summer:

1. Use a lighter, water based moisturizer

In winter, skin is drier and needs extra protection from cold so an oil-based moisturizer or a thicker formula is best suited for your skin. But summer’s soaring temperatures, sun and sweat won’t make a good environment for the heavy creams. Switch to a light lotion that is preferably water based. For oily skin, choose an oil-absorbing, mattifying formula or apply a primer over your moisturizer.

2. Increase your SPF usage

Not just the frequency, but also its number! If winter time is mostly cloudy where you live, a SPF 15 is generally a good choice for everyday wear. But summer’s sun is most damaging for your skin, especially if you are wearing other medicated treatments, so increase the SPF to 20 or 30 or even higher if needed, but make sure to reapply often (after sweating or washing your face it is best to reapply sunscreen in order to stay protected)

Hello Gorgeous!

13549587_988993684533094_1177202898_n
Review by Michelle from Teaching in Fashion

At the start of every summer I like to revamp my skincare routine. I find that I need to mix up products every few months so that my skin gets refreshed. Today, I am thrilled to share my new summer skincare routine with Murad Canada. Murad has just released a line that will improve your overall complexion. The White Brilliance line purifies, and restores your skin so that your brilliant complexion shines through.

The White Brilliance Cleanser is very gentle on the skin. This cleanser will not leave your skin feeling dry as it locks moisture in. As a lady in her ’30’s this is so important to me because having my skin stay hydrated takes years off- YAY!

My favourite product in this line is the White Brilliance Luminous Essence. This is a serum based product that exfoliates and hydrate the skin prepping it for the next product. This product is also very gentle so it locks in moisture leaving your skin gorgeous!

Lastly, my new night cream is the Murad Age Balancing Night Cream. Again Murad seems to know the exact formula my skin needs as this product has the perfect consistency. It’s not too heavy but it definitely provides that extra moisture your skin needs for night time.

These Murad products have really stepped up my summer skincare game and my skin could not be happier!

Do Skin Types Matter

There’s no dearth of skin products on the market to match every skin type, but don’t let it drive you crazy. Go by how your skin feels in response to the products you choose. Most people are oily in some places and drier in others. A few tips to consider:

  • If you’ve got oily skin, don’t be afraid to cleanse, treat and moisturize twice a day, as would a person with dry skin. Even though your skin looks “moist” doesn’t mean you could be missing key lipids to maintain your skin’s barrier: Your oil glands within the follicles are simply genetically programmed to be more active. Try using a cleanser with hydroxy acids on alternative days, or more often if your skin seems to respond well to it.
  • Dry skin is the most fragile. Be careful about over cleansing and over exfoliating, as your skin is more susceptible to irritation. Use a cleanser and tone with hydrating ingredients and exfoliate gently (and not every day). Look for products that contain skin soothers such as chamomile extract and arnica.
  • Fair-skinned people and those who spend a lot of time outdoors need to be extra cautious about over exposure to UV radiation. While a sunscreen with SPF 15 if sufficient for many, I recommend upping that coverage to at least 30 if you’re more sensitive to the sun. Similarly, if you take drugs that increase your sensitivity to the sun, which is the case for birth control pills, for example, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
  • Don’t overdo it. No matter what kind of skin you have, it’s easy to over clean and over exfoliate and in a word, irritate. You can also trigger excessive oil production with excessive use of soaps, cleansers, scrubs, and toners made with drying alcohols. Listen to what your skin is telling you and adjust your skin care routine accordingly

Give products up to six months to work and show results.

Why You Should Be Using An Oil-Based Makeup Remover

Did you know:

Renewing Cleansing Oil not only leaves your skin remarkably clean, it actually leaves your skin noticeably softer and smoother.

Renewing Cleansing Oil forms a strong bond with the oils and minerals that give your makeup its staying power. That’s why when you rinse off with Renewing Cleansing Oil, makeup, BB cream, sun-block, excess oil and impurities rinse off too—leaving skin free of potentially pore clogging debris. And Renewing Cleansing Oil isn’t just an exceptional makeup remover. Renewing Cleansing Oil supports the health of your skin by preserving your natural pH balance and strengthening skin’s natural protective barrier.

How to use:

Massage Renewing Cleansing Oil’s botanical oil formula directly onto dry skin to dissolve makeup—even the most stubborn mascara. Rinse off dissolved makeup and grime with a splash of water to enjoy skin that’s soft, residue-free and healthfully clean.

First Impressions of Murad

profile-pic-2
Review by laurens-list.com

Guys!! I am officially obsessed with Murad! Not only are their ingredients bomb but they deliver amazing results too. Like, no joke, my wrinkles/fine lines seemed to disappear overnight, okay maybe not completely but they sure were plump and smoothed by morning. Although I have not finished my bottles yet I’m pretty much hooked on their products and I can’t wait to try more… Keep reading to hear my thoughts.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture

This cream is a dry skin saviour!! It is an uber-rich, hydrating moisturizer that locks in hydration for up to eight hours. With an ultra concentrated and non-greasy formula it provides immediate, long-lasting hydration, smoothness and comfort. It is also formulated with Murad’s Collagen Support Complex which boosts the skin’s resilience and delivers a gorgeous glow!

I’m obsessed with this cream and love the fact that it comes with an applicator so that no bacteria gets trapped in the jar. It applies white, and disappears once massaged into your skin. It truly does leave you with plump, hydrated skin without that sticky silicone feeling.

No parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances/dyes, phthalates, GMOs or Triclosans.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence

I love this serum- it’s silky smooth texture instantly won my heart! Basically the Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence is a moisture-enhancing treatment that optimizes your skin’s capacity to retain moisture while leaving it plump and soft- I always use this before my Hydro-Dynamic Ultra Moisture and the combination is insane! It contains Mexican blue agave leaf extract to restore your skins ability to retain water, glycolic acid to gently exfoliate for a smooth natural texture and a blend of watermelon, apple and lentil to help reduce dryness, flakiness and rough patches. A definite re-purchase for me as it has become a staple in my routine.

No parabens or sulfates.

Murad Refreshing Cleanser

Their Refreshing Cleanser is a non-drying, foaming cleanser that claims to wash away surface oil and makeup. Did it work? It sure did. It’s formulated with Hawaiian white ginger, algae and cucumber extract and leaves your skin oh so fresh and clean (not sure if it has added fragrance but I’m loving the scent)! I absolutely love pairing this cleanser with my Clarisonic brush for an extra deep clean feeling!

Murad Hydrating Toner

I have been wanting to try this toner for ages! It’s gentle, hydrating formula and invigorating scent is a must. Murad’s Hydrating Toner is a classic complexion-perfecting toner, which means it rebalances and rehydrates your skin while neutralizing any surface impurities. It contains infusions of lecithin, chamomile and cucumber for a soft, rejuvenated look and feel. I also like this because it can double as a setting spray for your makeup.

Murad has quickly become my go-to for skincare. It’s been a while since I’ve been this blown away by a brand so I’m pretty excited. 🙂 I need to try all their products!

Have any of you tried Murad products, if so what are some of your favourites? I’ll definitely update you guys once I finish these.

Check them out at Murad Canada and @muradcanada (they’re also sold at Sephora Canada).

♡ Lauren
